Find out more about our different workshops that we regularly offer online and by demand.

"Preparing for the field" WorkshopAtelier

This workshop strives to prepare future students, researchers and other professionals to the reality of fieldwork.

These interactive sessions aim to tackle practical, ethical, cultural, sanitary reality, safety and relationship aspects of the field.

Aims:

  • Steps to take before the field: admin wise (insurance...), health (vaccines...) and also logistically (what should you pack?).

  • Talk about risks (safety, health, isolation) and discuss preventive strategies.

  • Discuss about the psychological difficulties linked to the phases of before, during and after the field.

  • Raise awareness about the specific challenges women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, minorities or young workers may face.

  • Promote ethical thinking on power dynamics, the relationship with the local population and the responsibility of each person.

  • Create a space for dialogue on the different lived experiences and encourage mutual aid and support.

Target audience:

Anyone and everyone preparing for fieldwork:

  • Doctoral or master students

  • Early researchers

  • Supervisors, principal investigators looking for solutions

  • Field engineers, technicians and assistants

Speakers:

For every workshop, we bring together a panel of different speakers with diverse and extensive field experience  in order to offer rich and diversified expertise suitable for all.

Format:

  • Workshops last 1 to 2 hours, in person or online

  • General introduction to Let's talk fieldwork, held biannually (early January and mid-June)

  • Also available by demand for any laboratory, university or research site

  • In French and in English

Reminder:

In the vast majority of cases, fieldwork is an exceptional human and professional experience: rich in discoveries, learning, and encounters. It is often a memorable and formative adventure, and we fully recognize its value. However, the primary goal of our workshops is not to highlight this exciting aspect, but to help you prepare for your first assignment with peace of mind. We aim to raise awareness of the challenges, difficulties, and potential risks that fieldwork may involve. The idea is not to create anxiety, but rather to give you the tools to anticipate and avoid situations that could become stressful.
